Handmade paper was first invented in China and slowly it paved its way to other parts of the world. Earlier, the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans scribed on a material that resembled paper know as “Papyrus”. In our nation, before the invention of paper, our forefathers used palm leaves or Tala Patra/Tada Patra for writing manuscripts. The invention of paper was indeed a boon for the development of human civilization as it was the primary source of passing on information from one generation to another. Paper has been easing the process of transfer of knowledge and information for generations together. In former times the production of paper was a secret art that was practiced by only a particular class of artisans who were know as “Kagzi”. Over the years the number of artisans engaged in this art of paper has gone down drastically and they have remained confined to a place near Jaipur called Sanganer in Rasjasthan. Sanganer is an area where their ancestors have been living for thousands of years and is considered to be one of the biggest centres of hand-made paper production in northern India.

Since ancient times, handmade paper has been used for writing on official documents and manuscript as well as for painting and calligraphy. The indigenous handmade paper industry had to face a stiff competition after the advent of machine made paper in India which was brought by the British. Swiftly and systematically the British worked towards replacing the indigenous art of paper making with their bulk production of machine made paper. However this wonderful art still continues to live even today in our country although being faced with several challenges and setbacks over the centuries. The Government of India is doing all that it can to revive this unique art and is taking several measures to help our craftsmen so that they don’t give up their inestimably precious ancestral skill. Such initiatives by the government have also encouraged the populace of India to stand by our craftsmen and buy their products for everyday use as well as for the purpose of gifting their friends and family; such awareness among the masses is indeed ensuring the survival of this precious art of our Nation.
